Since Texas Executive Women began its mentoring programs in 1993, it has touched the lives of over 2,500 middle and high school girls. The goal behind mentoring is to create possibilities for young women, provide role models, spark the desire for a better life, and show them how to plan for a better life. In 2022, the mentoring program has shifted it’s focus to mentoring college women in a partnership with University of Houston-Main and University of Houston-Downtown.
In the past, the Career Women of the Future programs at Alief Hastings High School in Houston and Ball High School in Galveston worked with young women in the 9th through 12th grade. In monthly workshops, TEW volunteers worked with the young women to create resumes, refine interview skills and consider career possibilities.
Also, in the past, the Ladies of Excellence program at Aldine Ninth Grade emphasized on improving self-esteem through team building, classes on etiquette and dress, career tours and encouraging responsibility. At Aldine Senior High, over 50 students in the Ladies of Distinction program met for monthly seminars. Each class of young women in the program had followed a tradition of performing over 6,000 aggregate hours of community services.
Career tours were an integral part of each mentoring program. Many of these visits were to the work places of our Women on the Move honorees as they were among the best role models for young, aspiring women.
Finally, proceeds from the Women on the Move® Luncheon funds not only went to the above mentoring programs, they also provided scholarships for mentees graduating from high school to attend a university, junior college, vocational or career education schools. Established in 1998 and named to honor Jackie Greer, founder of the mentoring program and 1985 Women on the Move, these scholarships have allowed many young women to pursue career options that may not be possible otherwise. Texas Executive Women is proud to have funded over $620,000 in scholarships over the years. In 2023, the Jackie Greer Scholarships will also be available to college women in the two partnering universities who complete the mentoring program.
TEW Organization
Texas Executive Women (TEW) is an organization of professional female executives from many different professions and industries. We come together to network, share experiences and professional resources, and we are actively involved in the community. TEW also strives to support programs that recognize, develop and fund the advancement of young women in the community, our mentoring and scholarship programs among them.
Eligible Participants
We are currently looking for female undergraduate students who are currently in their sophomore to senior year, are between the ages of 18 and 25 years old, have maintained a minimum B average while attending a Greater Houston Area college or university, and are dedicated to participating in mentoring activities, workshops, and events.
Program Elements
TEW members are committed to creating programs, events and activities that will develop young women, provide career exploration and the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to support college completion. We provide mentees with a TEW member mentor, workshops on career planning and professional skills, the opportunity to attend TEW sponsored events and activities, and the opportunity to apply to the Jackie Greer Scholarship to continue higher education and career goals.
Application Process
A selection committee will choose 8 young women from each partnering university for the mentoring program. If you would like to participate as a mentee you are required to submit an application and relay contact information, college information, and future career interests via the organization’s website.
